The Prescott Cardinals secured their first dual win of the season on the road at St. Croix Central High School on Thursday, Jan. 18. The Cardinals had three open weights to SCC's two, but still managed to pull away with a 10-point victory. Thursday night's dual began with a Ty Sanford pin over Oliver Olsen, which was Sanford's 100th career win.
Win or lose, Jason Janke's girls basketball team knows how to find the silver lining in their play. The Ellsworth Panthers lost 60-46 on Friday, Jan. 19 at home against Baldwin-Woodville, but were quick to point out the positives of this season compared to their 5-18 2016-17 run.
The Panthers wrestling team remains unbeaten in conference duals after the third week in January, and their latest large-margin win over Osceola makes it seem as though their Middle Border Conference success won't change any time soon. Ellsworth defeated Osceola 66-6 to claim their fourth MBC win of the 2017-18 season on Thursday, Jan. 18, and head coach Mark Matzek was happy to see his team bounce back after what he described as a "disappointing weekend" at the Kiffmeyer Duals the weekend before.
Basketball fans were in for a treat on Saturday, Jan. 20 when Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau traveled to Prescott for two high-caliber basketball performances. G-E-T's Lexi Wagner set high standards for the day by scoring 51 points against the Cardinals in her team's 75-52 victory, and Peter Brookshaw followed her performance in the second game of the day by scoring 48 points against G-E-T's boys team. Brookshaw's 48 set Prescott High School's new single game scoring record, which was originally set at 46 by Prescott boys basketball assistant coach Pat Ptacek.

Tensions around sports teams using Native-based mascots have been flaring for quite some time now. Professional sports teams such as the Washington Redskins and the Cleveland Indians have faced much uproar due to their chosen names over the last decade, but the controversy has not received as much spotlight at the high school level. Prescott High School students want to change that.
Ellsworth School District Superintendent Barry Cain was pleased to report on the successes of the new elementary school's opening at the Monday, Jan. 8 school board meeting. "I think our staff as a whole was was quite thrilled on Thursday and Friday when we transitioned back following the winter break," Cain said. "Quite frankly, it went very well."
The Spring Valley boys basketball team picked up a win in Plum City on Tuesday, Jan. 16 after eight days without competing. The Cardinals' win edged them past the Elmwood/Plum City Wolves in the Dunn-St. Croix Conference standings; SV is now 2-3 in conference play along with Mondovi and Glenwood City, while EPC sits at 1-4 just above the 0-5 Boyceville team. The 58-43 game began with the Tyson Kado show as the senior Cardinal came out scoring the first eight points of the conference matchup.
Tuesday, Jan. 16 was a successful night for Pierce County's Middle Border Conference basketball teams. All three teams that competed on Tuesday night — Prescott's boys and girls teams and the Ellsworth boys basketball squad — picked up wins and started off the second halves of their seasons on high notes.
